ITIs Covered Under CoEs

Upgradation of ITIs into Centre of Excellence

(Domestic and World Bank funding )

The main objective of the program was to upgrade the existing ITIsinto Centre of Excellence (CoEs) for producing multiskilled workforce of world standardby providing appropriate infrastructure, equipments, update syllabi and introducenew trades.

In Gujarat State, total 37 ITIs are upgraded into Centre of Excellenceas under:

Domestic Funding :

During the year 2005-06, in 1st Phase, 08 ITIs in Gujarat Statewere selected out of selected 100 ITIs across the country. Which were to be upgradedby financial assistance under domestic funding from Government of India. Total ProjectCost of 08 ITIs was Rs.1280.00 lakhs on 25:75 ratio basis between State and CentralGovernment.

World Bank Funding:

From the 2nd year of Implementation of the scheme, total 400 ITIs across the Nationwere to be upgraded under the Vocational Training Improvement Project (VTIP) withthe financial Assistance with the World Bank Assisted Project. Under this projecttotal 29 ITIs had to be upgraded in the State. Total Project Costof 29 ITIs was Rs.10000.00 lakhs on 25:75 ratio basis between State and CentralGovernment.

As mentioned above, 08 ITIs from Domestic Funding of the Government of Indiaand 29 ITIs with the World Bank Assisted Project, total 37 ITIs have been upgradedunder CoE.


Main feature of the Training and Best Practices;  

  • Training in Basic skill areas for period of one year, which is multiskill in nature.
  • Training in each Advance modules are of six month duration and eligibilityonly after the Broad Based Basic Training (BBBT) as per the choice of candidates(Outof three Advance Modules)
  • Training in a specialized module of Industry (The course curricula,duration etc. had been designed after the consultation with IMC / local Industries.)
  • Multi-entry and multi-exit provisions; which enable a trainee toenter for training and exit after completion of Basic module and Advance moduleat his convenience.
  • All the Syllabuses were revised with the help of Industries by CentralGovernment.
  • An 11 member Institute Management Committee (IMC) had to be constitutedin each of the CoE ITI under the Chairmanship of the Industry along with four otherrepresentatives from Industry and one from the Industrial association for the PublicPrivate Partnership including five members from Government side, IMCs were entrustedto manage the functioning of ITIs.

In view of above;

  • All the CoE ITIs now have the new / renovated buildings with theenchanting frontage.
  • Modern Equipment and Materials were procured with latest specifications& design as per the suggestions of the Industry Partner.
  • 06 modules of BBBT and 03 modules of Advance training in each sectorfrom the total no. of 09 various sectors accepted under Centre of Excellence schemein ITIs.
  • Sufficient staffs have been arranged in all ITIs and Industrial linkagehas been increased.
  • Experts have been invited from the Industries to deliver the lecturesto CoE trainees.
  • Trainers were also trained in professional institutions /industries.
  • Trainees and Trainers have got exposed to various Industries forthe latest Production Technology-Quality Measurement and Industrial Atmosphere.
  • Placement Advisory Bureau was established in CoE ITIs to providePlacement Assistance.
  • Campus interviews have been held for the placement of trainees.
  • Coordination between Employment Exchanges and ITIs has been increased.
  • With a view to improve English language and Communication skill,language labs were also established in these ITIs.
  • Websites of each of these ITIs have been developed for the advantageof Industries and Public.
  • Gujarat ’s experience of implementing the Centre of Excellence Schemehas become a model for other States to follow and has been appreciated by Governmentof India.
